Sensitize students to equity and inclusion issues, through the study of the life and ideas of Eleanor Roosvelt.

Get students used to work together, increasing weak students self-confidence thanks to the expert role played at the beginning.

Students subject achievement quiz, at least 50% score to pass.

A class of lower secondary school children

Population 

25 12-year-old students

  • linguistic issues (some student do not know well the official language)

Eleanor Roosevelt biography:

  • Early childhood;
  • Family life and children;
  • Life after Franklin contracted polio;
  • Work in the White House as a First Lady;
  • Life and death after Franklin’s death.

Phase 1

Task

Students work individually, but the teacher will assign a sub-topic every 5 students (Early childhood, etc). Each student  is assigned one of the sub- topics. They will receive learning content for the chosen topic, including obligatory and optional additional links.
Each student has some time to read, possibly twice, (at least) the obligatory content. Students are not requested to memorize the material.

Time 30 minutes

The students study individually their material as well as other material retrieved from the internet, possibly including material in their native languages.

  • URL – via email, e-learning platform or social group
  • Automatic translators for non-native speakers

Phase 2

Task

Prepare a summary of the information about the sub-topic they have all studied

Team Other

The students are aggregated in 5 groups (Expert groups) by the teacher. Each group contains the 5 students who studied the same sub-topic. The distribution should meet the following requirements:

  • Maximum of one student with learning difficulties in a group
  • Each student with learning difficulties works on a different sub-topic
  • All team members have studied the same sub-topic

Phase 3

Task

The students form new groups (the jigsaw groups), with at least one expert per sub-topic in each group. The teacher invites them to produce a presentation concerning E. Roosevelt, including information about the 5 sub-topics.

To this end, each student presents his/her subtopic to the group. The group is encouraged by the teacher to ask questions for clarification.

The teacher goes from group to group to observe and moderate the discussion.
